Cooking Class Brings Families Together in White County
Print This PostWhite County Family Connection just wrapped up a six-session Cook & Connect family cooking class this spring. It was a wonderful opportunity for families to connect, learn, and share time together in a welcoming space.
Throughout the course, families gathered in the commercial kitchen of a local church to prepare healthy, simple recipes while building confidence and learning practical skills they can use at home. Families explored meal planning, stocking the pantry with helpful staples, eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, and making easy, quick recipes that fit into busy family routines.

Exit survey responses showed that participants appreciated learning both new recipes and everyday kitchen skills. Favorite takeaways included making a spinach smoothie, trying different foods, preparing salad dressings from scratch, and creating homemade fruit drinks with sparkling water instead of buying sodas. One participant also shared how much she loved seeing her young son learn to cut safely using a child-safe knife.
Families shared that the class was about much more than cooking. One participant wrote, “This was an amazing class. Not just to cook but to learn with our kids and be hands on.” Another shared, “Having families come together and have fun while learning is the best learning experience.” Several families also mentioned the friendships they made during class, saying those connections made the experience even more enjoyable.
The cooking class illustrated that learning happens best when families are engaged, supported, and having fun together. The Collaborative looks forward to offering more opportunities for families to cook, learn, and connect.
