How You Can Help Victims and First Responders of the Highway 82 Wildfire in Brantley County

While donations at the fire command post are no longer being accepted, there are several ways people can give back to families and first responders.

BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. — The Highway 82 wildfire in Brantley County, Georgia, has grown exponentially to more than 22,000 acres as of Monday morning, devastating communities and burning at least 90 homes.

So many people from Brantley County and surrounding communities have been looking to help those in need, and give back to firefighters and first responders, that the Southern Area Incident Management Team leading the firefighting effort is no longer accepting physical donations at their command post in Brantley County.

However, there are three locations set up in the county to accept donations:

  • H&S Car Carriers – 125 Industrial Park Blvd. Nahunta, GA 31553
  • Twin Rivers Church Baptist Church – 17394 US Hwy 301, Hortense, GA 31543
  • Southside Baptist Church – 550 School St., Nahunta, GA 31553

The donation centers are being run by Brantley County Family Connection.

Items currently most in need for families

  • New under garments
  • Dog/cat food
  • Microwavable meals
  • Instant potatoes
  • Spaghetti/Alfredo sauce
  • Cup noodles
  • Condiments
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights

Items currently most in need for first responders

  • Windex wipes
  • AA/AAA/D batteries
  • Biolite
  • Pain wraps/Icy Hot pads
  • Tums and other antacids
  • Adhesive bandages
  • Yard trash bags
  • Bug spray
  • Eye glass cleaner
  • ACE bandages

In addition, the donation centers are asking for clothing racks, shelves and clothes hangers to help organize their space. Reusable grocery bags are also needed, Brantley County Family Connection said.

The University of Georgia Extension in Brantley County, working with Brantley County Family Connection, is currently asking for volunteers as donations come in. Those interested can call their office at 912-462-5724 or Crista at 904-574-0854.

Other donation sites across the Golden Isles

Several businesses across the Golden Isles region in Southeast Georgia have set up sites where you can donate:

  • J&J Tire & Service – Exit 29 location 233 Candler Drive, Brunswick (asking for laundry detergent, shampoo, ready-to-eat canned food, powdered milk, large Ziploc bags).

  • 1333 Oglethorpe Highway, Hinesville
  • Benchmark Physical Therapy – 1106 Fountain Park Circle, Brunswick (asking for personal hygiene items, linens, bedding, new under garments, kitchen utensils).
  • Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia – 4627 US Hwy 17, Brunswick (asking for dog & cat food, cat litter)
