The list goes on and on. And that list, of course, is the much anticipated, sometimes dreaded, back-to-school supply list.

For kids across the county, its arrival marks the beginning of the end of the lazy days of summer and the inevitable return to the Lumpkin County classroom. But for parents on a budget, it can also mean an unwelcome and unexpected cost.

While many can cover those costs, the numbers can add up. And with ever skyrocketing prices, these extra expenses can come at a bad time.

Enter Lumpkin County Family Connection. They’re here to help.

You might have noticed that help last week as a steady rotation of local volunteers manned a table at Walmart for the Stuff the Bus program. This initiative gave local residents the chance to help foot the bill for much needed school supplies as they worked to ensure that no students are left out when it comes to stocking up for the new school year.

And the need is definitely there, as the organization reported approximately 300 requests for assistance from parents looking to bridge the school supply budget gap.

This is just one of the many vital efforts made by an organization that makes a real difference in our community.

Lumpkin County Family Connection’s stated goal is to find a way for “local children to succeed in school and in life.” (If you want to help out, you can find out more at lumpkin.gafcp.org.)

And that’s a year round effort. Because when you get down to it, for many students. this is the first lesson of the school year. Thankfully, it’s a lesson in local generosity. And year after year, the folks at Lumpkin County Family Connection have shown that when it comes to that subject, they’re the best teachers around.
