They work silently. They work behind the scenes. And they work tirelessly on one of Lumpkin County’s most vital undertakings in a year-round effort to help local children in need.

They are the folks at Lumpkin County Family Connection. And their impact on our local community just can’t be overstated.

Last year, for example, they provided over 375 pairs of shoes to school children who were in serious need of footwear. At the same time they met and fulfilled over 3,500 requests for clothing. When it comes to food their Backpack Buddies program provided, and still provides, weekend meals for an average of 50 local families who otherwise might go without.

And really that’s just the beginning of efforts that range from mentor programs to support groups to parental education seminars.

But since most of their work occurs behind the scenes it often happens with little applause or fanfare. This week we’d like to change that.

Lumpkin County Family Connection is an organization that does exactly what their name sounds like. By working together with local partners, they provide the kinds of connections that can change families and our community for the better. For that we want to thank them.

And we should add they’re always looking for new volunteers to help out in the effort. Just take a look at lumpkin.gafcp.org if you’re interested. Or if you don’t have time to volunteer, donations are always welcome as well. Their biggest needs are often backpacks, school children-sized clothes, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toilet paper and laundry detergent.

Like we said, it’s a big undertaking. But somehow, someway the folks at Lumpkin County Family Connection find a way to quietly get it done.

And, for that, they deserve our loudest and rowdiest applause.

This is the fifth in a reoccurring series of Nugget editorials written to shine a spotlight on the community’s many worthwhile non-profit organizations.
