The Judicial Council of Georgia focuses a great deal of its community engagement efforts on civics education for Georgia students K-12, with the goal of deepening understanding of the role of the judicial branch in our system of government.

These efforts are aimed at inspiring robust civic participation by future generations of Georgians. Indeed, when it comes to civic activities such as jury duty, it takes all of us to safeguard constitutional protections and make our system work as intended.

To promote civics education, the Judicial Council anchors its efforts around three civic holidays:

  1. Constitution Day, September 17;
  2. Bill of Rights Day, December 15; and
  3. Law Day, May 1.

In honor of Constitution Day 2023, the Judicial Council produced a five-part, animated series of video shorts called, “Your Constitution in Action.”

The video shorts feature Georgia judges explaining the way in which the Constitution—our nation’s foundational document—continues to inform judicial decisions to this day, 236 years after its signing. The content of these videos is timeless, and we hope teachers will use them and students will enjoy them for many years to come.

“Your Constitution in Action” and a treasure trove of additional videos featuring Georgia judges is available on the Judicial Council’s YouTube channel.  Those videos include Judicial Council meetings, a series called “Meet the Members of the Judicial Council of Georgia,” a series on women’s suffrage in honor of the 19th Amendment’s 100th anniversary in 2020, and much more.

The Judicial Council of Georgia/Administrative Office of the Courts was created in 1973 to develop policies for administering and improving Georgia courts. The Judicial Council and its committees meet throughout the year to address specific aspects of court administration and improvement. Chaired by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, the Council is made up of 28 members who represent every class of court and the State Bar of Georgia.
