The OrganWise Guys (OWG) is partnering with Georgia Family Connection Partnership (GaFCP) and the Get Georgia Reading Campaign this summer to provide all Georgia’s children with access to digital resources that help families nurture healthy habits in a fun and engaging way, available from May 20 through Aug. 15.

“Our mission is to help kids be healthy and smart from the inside out, and so we’re thrilled to bring fun, evidence-based, healthy living content to the families in our home state,” said Dr. Michelle Lombardo, OWG co-founder. “We agree with GaFCP and the Get Georgia Reading Campaign that children thrive when they develop healthy habits and have access to nutritious food and consistent medical care. We hope all of Georgia’s kids will take advantage of a whole new approach to creating healthy habits while improving literacy and other positive lifestyle skills.”

For more than 25 years, OWG has worked with schools, early learning centers, public and private health organizations, nutrition experts, and educators across the country to create a whole child approach to the prevention of childhood obesity.

OWG is a curriculum-linked, evidence-based approach to nutrition, physical activity, and social and emotional well-being spanning pre-K to fifth grade that inspires children to embrace a holistic, health-focused, balanced life. Children connect with Hardy Heart, Madame Muscle, Sir Rebrum, and more characters who participate in everyday events and experiences to which kids relate. The OWGs’ motto is: “We love who we live in, so please take care of us!”

“When children meet their own lovable OrganWise Guys and learn how hard they’re working, they’re eager to learn how they can take better care of them,” said Lombardo. “Engaging children in this manner resonates with them, and the lessons stick for a lifetime.”

The digital platform contains engaging content for children ages 3 – 11 with storybooks read aloud by the cast of friendly characters in both English and Spanish, lesson plans, student study guides, a library of short and longer form videos, recipes, and more.

“Nearly 25% of children in our state struggle to get basic necessities to live healthy and productive lives,” said Get Georgia Reading Campaign Director Arianne Weldon. “Kids need to be healthy to fully participate in their education and developmental opportunities. Children thrive when they develop healthy habits, and we’re thankful to The OrganWise Guys for providing an opportunity for families to do that this summer in a way that’s fun for the whole family.”

OWG is curriculum-linked to state-specific objectives in math, science, language arts, and health and physical education as well as national STEM and Head Start standards. OWG is also included in the USDA’s SNAP-Ed PSE Toolkit as a Research-Tested Program.

Kids who use the OWG program are shown to have statistically significant improvements in weight, waist circumference, blood pressure measures, BMI percentile, and standardized test scores. This research is published in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Journal of Public Health, and Journal of Healthcare for the Poor and Underserved.

A study conducted by the University of Mississippi Center for Research and Evaluation also found statistically significant improvements in literacy scores for both pre-K students as well as those in third through fifth grade.

“One out of every three children in America today are overweight and obese—and these kids are five times more likely to be overweight or obese as adults,” said Lombardo. “We want better for our children, and that starts by helping them understand that their bodies are an incredible million-dollar piece of machinery.”
