Teen Maze Shows Students Consequences of Their Real-Life Choices

More than 1,500 Crisp County students in grades 8-12 experienced the benefits and pitfalls of life-altering choices—without the consequences—as they made their way through the teen maze at Crisp County High School. This is the second year the Crisp County Community Council brought its Teen Maze to Cordele.

“The goal of a Teen Maze,” said Kathy Garwood, Georgia Family Connection coordinator at Crisp County Community Council, “is to encourage high school completion. The Maze presents middle- and high-school students with a variety of obstacles that can prevent or delay their graduation. While this is only a game, participants learn that every real-life decision they make has consequences.”

Community members from Crisp County work together to show eighth- through 12th-graders real-life experiences without the consequences:

 

Georgia’s House and Senate passed two bills last month that take aim at distracted driving. SB 360, sponsored by Senator Jack Murphy (R-Cumming), makes it illegal for drivers in Georgia to text on a handheld device while driving. It will be called the Caleb Sorohan Act in remembrance of a Morgan County teenager who was killed in a crash while texting and driving. HB 23, sponsored by Representative Matt Ramsey (R-Peachtree City), bans drivers under 21 from talking on cell phones while driving. The bills will become official after Gov. Sonny Perdue signs them into law. Deputy Ronnie Youngblood of the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office shows students the deadly consequences of texting while driving:
