Executive Director, Habersham County Family Connection

Habersham County Family Connection is working to increase child and family well-being and to broaden partnerships to connect services and resources to mothers ages 18-25 with less than 12 years of education.

We know that affordable housing, transportation, and mental health are primary concerns in Habersham County. There’s not enough pre-K slots for all children to be prepared for kindergarten, and we need more affordable child care to assist adults who are working or completing their education. Families need more access to physical and mental health services.

One way we support families is through our Baby & Me Community Resource Nights that allows parents to meet with:
• our Health Department and District 2 Public Health;
• Amerigroup, CareSource, and Peach State care management organizations;
• Volunteers for Literacy, a nonprofit, United Way agency;
• North Georgia Technical College, which provides assistance with GED classes, English as a second language classes, and certificates or diplomas in vocational programs;
• the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for WIC;
• Goodwill, which focuses on career placement; and
• our Family Resource Center, which includes the First Steps Program, family counseling, and other supports.

I first served as coordinator for Family Connection in the mid-1990s. Now, in my fourth year back, I’ve witnessed Georgia Family Connection Partnership (GaFCP) significantly expand its’ support to all 159 counties. By utilizing more data tools and advanced technology, GaFCP has streamlined data organization to better evaluate programs and services at the county level. Counties working on the same indicators share their successes, fostering collaboration and improvement statewide.
