VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) – As the ongoing federal government shutdown strains families across South Georgia, the Greater Valdosta United Way (GVUW) is taking decisive action to keep food on tables and support within reach.

In response to a surge in requests for help, GVUW has distributed $15,000 in emergency food assistance to local nonprofits serving residents in eight of its eleven counties. The aid ensures access to food, shelter, and other essential needs for families and seniors hit hardest by the shutdown.

“Our community depends on these frontline agencies,” said Michael Smith, GVUW President and CEO. “When a crisis like this hits, we have to make sure no one falls through the cracks. We’re seeing a drastic rise in calls for help, and this funding allows our partners to keep serving those most affected.”

The emergency initiative was made possible through a $6,000 contribution from GAF, a valued community partner, along with funds from GVUW’s United We Thrive 2026 Campaign.

Recipients of the emergency support, identified in collaboration with Second Harvest of South Georgia, include:

GVUW credited its Executive Board of Directors for swiftly approving the emergency relief, demonstrating strong leadership and a commitment to community resilience.

“When uncertainty strikes, South Georgia comes together,” Smith added. “We’re grateful for every partner and donor who helps meet needs and bring hope to our neighbors. Together, we’re proving that United is the Way.”
