Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is partnering with the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation (AFYF) and Good Sports to increase opportunities for low-income youth to participate in regular physical activity by donating equipment to community groups across the state.

They’ve issued a call for community groups in Georgia to submit applications for this second round of equipment donation grants.

The deadline for applications is June 15, 2011. Community organizations in Georgia may apply through the Good Sports Web site.

“I am proud to see the great strides by AFYF and Good Sports, Inc. to truly make an impact on our youth,” said Cagle in an Atlanta Daybook story. “One out of every three children in Georgia suffers from obesity. Not only does this affect kids’ physical health, but it also impacts a child’s self-esteem, leading to greater troubles in the future.”

Troubled by the growing problem of childhood obesity, Cagle launched Healthy Kids Georgia to increase health and wellness programs in schools.

Good Sports—a non-profit organization that partners with sporting goods manufacturers to distribute equipment, apparel and footwear to youth programs serving underprivileged children—has already generated equipment donations valued at $113,000 in 16 counties across Georgia, providing 7,682 kids with opportunities to be physically active. With this new $50,000 grant to Good Sports, AFYF is funding donations in fall 2011 and spring 2012.
