Low Birthweight Promising Practices Forum
First Steps to a Better Future for Georgia's Children

Georgia Family Connection Partnership, RAND Corporation, and the Promising Practices Network hosted a Low Birthweight Promising Practices Forum at The Arthur M. Blank Family Office in Atlanta in December 2008, funded in part by a grant from Healthcare Georgia Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.

A panel of national and Georgia experts on child and maternal health reported on recent trends, the serious effects of low birthweight on our children, and promising practices for prevention in hopes that this event would be a first step in making significant improvements for Georgia's children and families.

Listen to the presentations:

Dr. Juan Acuña, associate professor of obstetrics-gynecology, genetics, and epidemiology at the Florida International University College of Medicine
Dr. Carol Hogue, professor of maternal and child health, and epidemiology at Emory University
Dr. Kathleen Adams, health economist and associate professor in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University
Dr. Sandra Elizabeth Ford, director of the Division of Public Health at Georgia Department of Human Resources
Dr. Carladenise Armbrister Edwards, chief of staff at the Georgia Department of Community Health
Tonya Lewis Lee, Esq., national spokesperson of A Healthy Baby Begins with You campaign

This brief document summarizes key Georgia data and sets a direction for prevention that we will discuss more fully in the compendium to be released this spring. We hope this document and the Low-Birthweight Promising Practices Forum will be just a first step in making significant improvements for Georgia’s children and families.
